Prof. Moshe Gammer (1950-2013)

Professor Moshe Gammer was a world-renowned scholar and a highly respected expert on the Caucasus, with a wide range of interests, including the History and contemporary affairs of the Caucasus, Central Asia, and the Middle East, historiography and the relationship between history and politics, Russia and the Muslim World, France and the Middle East, Muslim resistance movements, and Sufism. He taught at the Department of Middle Eastern and African History, Tel Aviv University, for three decades and is the author of several books and numerous articles, including: Muslim Resistance to the Tsar: Shamil and the Conquest of Chechnia and Daghestan, London: Frank Cass, 1994; and The Lone Wolf and the Bear: Three Centuries of Chechen Defiance of Russian Rule, London: C. Hurst & Co. and Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2005.
