My research discusses questions concerning the social arena and its dynamics in the in the 18th century Ottoman province of Diyarbakir, south-east of the Ottoman Empire. It focuses mainly on the formation of Ottoman-local elite while discussing social and cultural aspects of their lives such as family patterns, material culture, architecture, households and careers. It is shown how social aspects interacted with the physical entities so that the relations between the abstract and the concrete were dialectic rather than neutral or fixed, reflecting and at the same time, framing one another.
